This in from Hourchive correspondent “my mom”:
I was a Saturday morning, TV-watching, cereal-eating devotee from my earliest memories, which would be mid to late 1950’s. While it probably wasn’t original material, it was a block of programming created just for kids: Mighty Mouse, Lone Ranger, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, Bugs Bunny, Sky King, Captain Kangaroo, Soupy Sales, Shari Lewis.
I remember one winter when I was in first or second grade when we missed so many days of school because of snow that we had to go to school on Saturdays for a month that spring. I had to climb onto the school bus while my two younger sisters plunked themselves down in front of the TV set. I will never, ever forget how outraged I felt that not only did I have to go to school, but I had to miss Saturday morning cartoons. For. A. Whole. Month.
Cereal was linked to Saturday morning TV even then. I remember deeds to like a square inch of Yukon land being offered in boxes of one brand of cereal as a tie in to Sergeant Preston, one of my favorite shows.
