While I agree with Drew on the necessary aspects of a movie theater, I am in John's camp in the sense that I have effectively stopped going to theaters altogether due to the clientele. There's always someone who insists that their experience is more important than everyone else's.
Drew's Chase Park comments reminded me of a Tivoli experience I had while watching Jerry Seinfeld's Comedian. About 25 mins into the movie, a cat decided to sit in front of the projector, obscuring about a third of the screen with a perfect cat-shaped silhouette. It remained there for about a half-hour before moving on. I'm fairly certain it actually improved the movie.
